The University of California Riverside Campus Space Assessment

The University of California at Riverside (UCR) has experienced a significant enrollment surge in recent years, with the Chancellor predicting continued growth within the next five years. Despite the ongoing growth, significant state budget cuts have caused the university to maximize their current space, until new sources of funding become available. With the prospects for new buildings unfeasible, Facility Programming and Consulting was contracted to assist UCR in exposing the underutilized spaces and maximizing the campus resources.

Through a series of focus groups, interviews, and campus tours, Facility Programming was able to complete an in-depth space utilization study and facility strategy, which identified underutilized spaces and provided suggestions for relocation or repurposing of available assets. A demand analysis helped assure that student spaces, classrooms and common areas would be “right-sized” to best suit current and future university needs.

Given the current growth trend, space needs were projected to an enrollment of 30,000 students. Additionally, an analysis evaluating the needs for future renovation and construction projections was provided.
